For the last two years, we’ve worked side by side creating videos with the Figure AI team and the F.02 robot. We were there when it took its first steps. And now, with the help of the original on-screen robot Arnold Schwarzenegger, we’ve helped it take its last.
F.02 has been Terminated!


We get to do a fair amount of amazing projects across many industries with our incredible clients, but this has been one of the most epic shoots ever. And yes, we actually did melt real robots, in real molten steel.



Think Foundy... at a Foundry


The first thing we had to do was find a working steel foundry for the actual video production. You might think this would be easy with a high profile project and mega-star like Arnold Schwarzenegger. It wasn’t. There were a variety of safety, legal, and operational considerations to address - which ultimately took us across the globe.


For something this bold, we thought, “who’s done crazy stuff like this before?” The answer.. was MythBusters. So we got in contact with one of the producers of MythBusters itself - Linda Wolkovitch. Linda ultimately helped connect us with a steel foundry in Finland, featuring a 75-ton furnace, that was excited to work on this. Now that the location was locked, we gathered our favorite crew and went off to Finland.



Filming Gear & Molten Metal


We spent the first day on location doing a tech scout. That day enabled everyone to understand how the foundry works, where we could be, and what we needed to watch out for. When you’re using complex equipment, to film complex equipment, in a complex environment - you need to ensure everything is in sync. 


The next day was actual production. Filming at the foundry was one of the most complex, loud and crazy productions you can imagine. When the huge electrodes start the melt, it emits so much power you can feel it in your body. The entire crew was dressed in full flame-resistant clothes and suits. Each person was responsible for their own camera and gear packages, ensuring we captured these once-in-a-lifetime shots together.


We shot the video on RED and Pixboom. We’ve always filmed Figure content on RED. The ability to capture 6K raw in R3D, with the range of brightness from the furnace and darkness of the foundry, was essential. For slow motion, we used Pixbooms to get close to 1000fps - bringing another level of intensity to the footage. 


In total, we completed six Figure F.02 robot melts, over 24 hours on-site. Despite the extreme conditions and electromagnetic fields, the robots ran their AI policies seamlessly, even as some of our camera equipment and other electronics failed in the environment.



Working with a Legend


Beyond just the melt, working with Arnold Schwarzenegger was incredible. There’s always something  surreal about directing someone you grew up watching. When a person who's existed on a screen throughout your childhood, is suddenly looking to you for direction - it’s one of those moments where the past and present collide, and you have to remind yourself to take it all in.


The Figure AI F.02 robot melt was an incredible project, with incredible partners. We want to give an extra thank you to the Figure AI team for trusting us as their creative partners, and congratulations bringing to life one the most  iconic moments in real robotics history. 🦾
