           Back when some of the team and I were working in-house at Tesla, we were tasked with creating tutorial videos for the Model 3 in an effort to streamline a very lengthy and hands on delivery experience where a team member would walk you through using your new Tesla. ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

            Although a Tesla operates very similarly to the majority of vehicles, there is a learning curve and a lot of technology that owners need to know how to use and navigate.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
          ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           We did our research to see what others are doing for tutorial content for automotive and other technology. We found what we expected - long boring videos, often with a voice over, where it's torturous to watch.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
          ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           We had to innovate. We had to take a new approach. One that is easy for viewers to follow along, fast for viewers to learn form, engaging and highly relatable.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
          ﻿
          &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            With those goals in mind, we focused on visual information and visually showing the process of usage in a simple step by step format. We first experimented by taking various photos of this process, whittled that down and developed storyboards.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          Even with the visual first approach, we still needed a little more exposition for viewers and owners and opted to add interjected text cards between certain steps for that little extra context.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
          The result was a batch of 10 Video Guides ranging from between 20-90 seconds.
         &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Since 2018, these video guides have been helping prospective and new owners easily learn about their new Model 3. These guides have been implemented in the Tesla App, on the Model 3 Touchscreen and on Tesla Supports website.

      <title>Filming Koalas in the Wild</title>

           I remember when the original “Planet Earth” came out in 2006. They had shots unlike anything I’d ever seen before. They raised the bar by using HD video (a difficult thing at the time), time lapses, aerial footage, and a host of other incredible shots that came purely through planning. It expanded my idea of what a nature documentary could be, and became the new gold standard in that area.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           A decade later, “Planet Earth II” released in 2016 and blew everyone away - again. This time everything was closer, tighter, and moved with the animals. In many ways, the audience got to see things from the perspective of the animals for the first time.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           I remember watching some of the behind the scenes for “Planet Earth II,” as they talked about using new technology in exciting and unexpected ways. Beyond that, it seemed they did even more planning for shots. They took weeks to learn about the behaviors of specific animals rather than just a species, planning out shots long in advance to capture the perfect moment. This was something that really stuck with me the second time around.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           I’ve filmed a number of nature documentaries, and I often think about the beauty of these two nature docs, as well as the methodology. What are you doing differently? How are you creating something new? How does that serve the story?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We filmed a short documentary on how the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia is working to count Koalas. Using DJI drones and AI, the researchers can count Koalas much faster and more accurately than they used to walking on foot. These numbers are vital to understanding how Koalas are being affected by different activities over time, ultimately helping to protect them.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           As we began planning the min-doc, I watched a lot of videos on Koalas to see what was out there. I noticed that really all of the video I could find was shot on a tripod, always looking up with a tight lens from far away. These shots are fine in terms of identifying the subject, but you’re always subtly aware that you’re far away from these creatures. Creatively speaking, they’re also rather static shots, because on the tripod you can only keep a still frame, pan, or tilt.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           I had the idea to put a very small camera on a very small gimbal, at the end of a very long pole to get closer. This would allow us to film the Koalas more dynamically, and more from their perspective in their natural habitat.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           There were a few things we needed to do to accomplish this. The first main area was in understanding the subject. So often creatives focus more on the medium than the subject, when in fact you need to start with a solid understanding of your subject to capture it well.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Many animals are skittish when you put a camera near them. Many are nocturnal, and will merely be sleeping in the day. Beyond that, they often behave differently at different times of the year.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           I spoke with our main contact and partner at QUT, Dr. Grant Hamilton, to ask him about Koalas’ behavior. I learned how Koalas are often somewhat sedated from the eucalyptus leaves they eat, and how they sleep an average of 22 hours per day. This meant that we’d be able to get near some if we could get a camera high enough, but they may provide very little interaction on screen. I learned about how high or low they might perch in trees, how their behavior differs when they have a joey (baby), and more. This knowledge was essential for planning shots before getting on location.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The second main area we needed to figure out then was the technology to get the Koalas up close on screen. Many productions will simply go to a zoo to get close to Koalas, but then you have to blur the background to an unrecognizable level. We wanted to plant our cameras near them in their natural habitats, high off the ground in eucalyptus trees.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           We used a DJI Osmo Raw featuring the X5R camera, mounted onto a large extendable carbon fiber pole. The Osmo Raw was ideal, because it was the smallest camera available including gimbal, that could film raw footage. The Osmo could be controlled remotely with an iPad using the Osmo’s own WiFi signal, which reached far enough to stay connected to us on the ground. This was also something we tested before getting to location and filming. The carbon fiber pole was light yet extremely strong, making it a perfect way to span such long distances.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           With both our subject and technology prepared, we headed out to Australia to film. We only had three days to capture everything we needed, rather than the weeks or months a team might get for something on National Geographic or BBC. That extra time is invaluable for truly capturing unique and interesting animal behavior, but for this project, we at least wanted to capture the Koalas from their perspective in the wild, using dynamic movements.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The first Koalas we found were too high - easily over 100 ft in the air. We used a drone for some further shots, but you don’t want to get too close to the animals with the louder aircraft, to avoid overly disturbing them.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The second area we found Koalas in was just right, with two individuals in two separate trees - one with a joey. We set up our Arri Alexa Mini with a 200mm lens from the ground for additional coverage, and set about erecting our tree-bound camera contraption. The camera itself was heavily taped to the end of the pole, with everything preset before hoisting it into the air. As we came close to the first Koalas, we found that we could rest the top of the pole on a nearby branch for stability. We could then slide the pole across the branch to truck, or rest it where two branches split as a base to dolly or boom.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Throughout a number of encounters during the three day shoot, the Koalas were mostly content to have the camera nearby. The mothers with joeys were the most vigilant and active if you came close, but the solo males wouldn’t react at all. We used a 24mm lens on the X5R, which could actually trick you into thinking you were too close for comfort, but then you’d realize you still had some safe space between the camera and the animal. We got the shots we were looking for, and filmed the rest of the story on the ground like any other shoot.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Filming nature presents its own unique challenges, but really every shoot depends on knowing your subject to get the best shots. Whether it’s understanding how a car drifts around a corner, or how a patient feels when they talk with a doctor, these details are all part of capturing something that’s different, fresh, and memorable. At that point, you can look at the box of tools available to figure out the best ways to capture that subject. As creatives, we should always be looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible. As storytellers, we should always be thinking about how that creative serves the story.

      <title>Location Scouting for Video Production</title>

           If you're not familiar with location scouting, it's part of the pre-production process and something every video project goes through when it needs a practical location. A practical location is any location that is real and not a stage or backlot.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           So where do you begin with location scouting? No easy answer, it all depends on the need of the project, the project's budget, possibly the time of year and other factors (especially where your sun and shadows will be!). But the first step is reaching out to a local Location Scout or Location Manager. These roles, oftentimes synonymous to a certain degree, are the experts to work with to help you find location options. Often times these are people with decades of production experience and extensive knowledge of their areas who have found, scouted, arranged and managed locations for an ample amount of productions.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We begin by looking up Location Scouts/Managers on a local Film Commission website. Typically every state will have a Film Commission (sometimes County's and City's do too) and on their website and they list a ton of crew that reside in their state.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It's sometimes of a hit or miss with how many people are listed and how many recent projects the local crew have listed, but it's a great starting point. IMDB is great too! We try and find a scout/manager who has done automotive projects before and reach out to them to find out more.            Once we reach out, we explain the project a little, the type of locations or looks we're looking for and the location scout/managers availability. From their, we like to do what's called a "File Pull", that's where the scout/manager will send you a link to previous locations they have scouted and saved in their database. This is a great place to start to get an idea of the locations, the roads, etc... From there we find some locations we like and ask to have other similar locations scouted.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The project then moves to the actual scouting. This is where your scout/manager will go take current scout photos of your location selects and new locations. This enables you to see what the location looks like this time of year, and if there are any issues (such as road work, roads are snowed in, the business closed, the parking lot is being repaved, etc...) that prevent that location from being viable.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           On these scouts, it's ideal that the Director &amp;amp; Director of Photography of the project go along for the scout or do a follow-up scout with the location scout/manager. From there you choose the location(s), chose your dates, permit and ideally the same location scout/manager stays on your project as your Location Manager to facilitate that aspect of production.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That's a look at the scouting process to find locations. Now here are some of my techniques, tools, and apps we like to use when scouting directly or with a location scout.

           Planet has the latest satellite images, sometimes even from just a few days prior. It's a great online tool to research the landscapes, find the ideal colors for fall and spring, find snow and when/where it's most ample during what time of the year.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           This app is amazing for you to walk away from any location with a ton of pre-viz and data. Not only is it a great way to capture the angles you like, you can also set it to simulate the camera you plan to use so you can get reference lensing for the angles and areas you might want to shoot later.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Helios Pro has become our savior when it comes to location scouting. This app has tons of features, with such a simple UI, you can pretty much show up to a location in the dead of night and still walk away with all the sun and shadow data you need to plan your shoot with.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;a&gt;&#xD;

           The pro version enables you to visualize locations as 3D renders on the fly and move the sun through the day to see where the sun and shadows are. Don't want to sit on top of the rooftop parking structure for another 2 hours? BAM, simulate and see when and where the sun is cut off by the building across the way. Want to place a model in the frame and find the best positioning? Done. Want to take photos with sun data overlaid? Done. It has a ton more useful features.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           We always take a drone with us on every scout. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            The Mavic Pro series is compact, the battery lasts about 25min, the camera is superb and has tons of features. For driving footage projects, we'll throw it up and try and nab some passing cars to get some simple angles and feel out the type of flight paths and maneuvers a location offers. Just having that aerial perspective puts the location into a whole new understanding for you and a way better way for reviewing in a presentation.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Beyond that, this drone has the ability to shoot (and stitch!!) 360 panoramas in ~30 seconds. We've found this immensely helpful for reviewing the location for planning and logistics. 
           &#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is the first camera we say that got 360 right. It’s easy to use, sends a low res preview to your phone, shoots in ProTune and has easy to use software to process the 360. Fair warning: it's processing intensive to render 360 videos, but well worth it! Plan to cook the files overnight. When we're scouting for a road location, we now suction it on the top of a car and record the entire roads drive in both directions and output a master 360 file. We'll use this for planning and prep to better understand where we want to be, when, what maneuver and find little things like mile markers, signs and other things along the road that may be a visual impediment we need to work around or avoid.
           &#xD;

            With COVID-19 happening, events and event videos aren't a thing. We thought it would be fun to breakdown and share a project from 2019 we did with Karma Automotive and their multi-day sponsorship event of the Davis Film Festival.

            If you work in Events, Marketing or anything surrounding that - you've probably seen a bunch of event wrap-up or highlight videos, or even most likely hired a video team to create some for your events. Event highlight videos often times have an eclectic production value to them based on the talent that was hired, the approach they took, the tools they used and all circumstances around that.
           &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

            Karma Automotive hired us for a very unique and specific type of event video. The company joined on to sponsor the 2019 Davis Film Festival. Karma invited a handful of Chinese celebrities and others prominent in the entertainment space to attend.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Karma being a California car company owned by the Chinese, this was a very important event to share and highlight over in China that Karma is beginning to support the California and Hollywood centric entertainment industry.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Our clients ask was simple: Make this event look epic, cinematic and like movie. And make our CEO look like a celebrity.﻿
          &#xD;

            With that in mind, we strapped on our MOVI Pro and a Ready Rig suit and spent three days following the events Karma had setup for their guests and the main award show event.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
          ﻿

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           With this camera setup, we opted to film in slow motion (60fps) to really dial in a slow cinematic feel. Every camera move was dynamic with slow pushes, pulls, slides, swoops and more to keep the energy of the footage up. Every framing and composition was decided on the fly for a rich visual storytelling style.
           &#xD;

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           We even had some fun strapping Casey to a gold cart to get some smooth driving shots of their new Karma Revero GT. Really making the most out of what's available &amp;#55357;&amp;#56834;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Overall we ended up with three short videos, one chronicling each of the three days. We turned around all editing and post-production same day (well really in the evening) for Karma's team to take and finalize to use on their social media in China.

            This was our approach to making an event feel cinematic and hopefully even more exciting than had you been their yourself!
